ABSTRACT

Technologies for video games have advanced dramatically over the past decade, revolutionising the motion picture, game and multimedia industries. Similar technologies, such as virtual reality and digital modelling, have been used in the construction domain; examples can be found in urban planning and city modelling. The nD game project, by the University of Salford, developed a computer game to inspire younger generations into the construction industry. With modern games technology becoming more and more sophisticated, and the vast amount of technologies that have been developed during the game development, this chapter explores the opportunities to apply gaming technology in the construction arena. Technologies such as game artificial intelligence (AI) and behavioural modelling for construction simulation, massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) for the virtual construction site, and interactive games for construction training are discussed.
