ABSTRACT
The modern state system in the Middle East and North Africa is relatively young; most states achieved independence in themid-twentieth century.The creation of these states was profoundly affected by the influence of European forces including colonialism and two world wars (see Chapter 5). Yet, despite the often tumultuous history leading to the creation of these countries, the modern state system has been remarkably stable for the last half century (Map 3.1).
