ABSTRACT
The origins of the modern Middle East and North Africa can be traced directly to the development and spread of Islam in the seventh century. Islam created not only a new religious community, but also vast and complex empires. The institutions and achievements of these empires created a legacy that still influences the modern era (Map 4.1).
