ABSTRACT

M ultiple forces operate continuously and reciprocally to shape the self-esteem systems of African American adolescent girls. In addition to all the normal developmental issues associated with adolescence, they must deal with daily experiences of marginalization based on their race/ethnicity and gender. These developmental and environmental factors present African American girls with significant challenges to developing and internalizing positive self-esteem (Diller, 2007).
