ABSTRACT

T he transition into young adulthood from adolescence requires completing a variety of developmental tasks that include becoming more independent, developing new relationships, including intimate relationships, and beginning a career. Depending on people’s level of self-esteem, as well as their coping skills and support system, this transition can include alcohol and other drug (AOD) overuse and abuse. The focus of this chapter is on counseling young adults struggling with AOD-related concerns to move into recovery by helping them improve their self-concept and develop more positive self-esteem.
