ABSTRACT

The growth of a developing economy is highly dependent on the growth of its energy consumption. Because of the possibility of inter-fuel substitution in enduse applications, the optimal supply of long-term energy requirements of a country necessitates an examination of all energy resources available both indigenously and globally. The Government of India plans to achieve a GDP growth rate of 10 per cent in the Eleventh Five Year Plan and to maintain an average growth of around eight per cent in the next 15 years (Planning Commission 2002).
