ABSTRACT

For accountants and auditors, the 1970s were much like the 1930s. Newspapers and magazines lambasted auditors for failing to detect fraud. Accountants debated among themselves how best to write accounting standards. Congressional committees held lengthy hearings seeking proposals to make accounting firms serve the public interest.
