ABSTRACT
At the beginning of the new era of China opening up in the early 1980s, a television documentary ‘River Elegy’ (heshang) swept the nation. In 2006, almost two decades later, CCTV aired a super documentary series ‘The Rise of a Great Nation’ (daguojueqi) which was accompanied by mounting heated debates among the people of PRC, including the Chinese living overseas.
