ABSTRACT

When British explorers boarded ships heading for Africa, they had a varying awareness of the general ideals and objectives of visual documentation. While some had been provided with a mass of information and instructions, others probably did not have a clear idea of what type of picture would be most appreciated in Europe. In Africa, however, they all came to realize that they could not entirely govern the content of their sketchbooks or photographic plates as conditions for visual documentation signifi cantly directed the production of pictures.
