Reform and development of the public health system
Since 1997, when the Asian fi nancial crisis erupted, the Chinese government has adopted countermeasures to foster and enlarge domestic demands, and effect a signifi cant “package reform” of the country’s economic and social systems. The aim has been to mitigate the impact of stagnant external demands and a slump in domestic demand, and to insure China’s national economy continues to grow in a fast and healthy way. The implementation of such macroeconomic policies and reform measures has enabled China’s economy to keep growing rapidly during the past decade, fortifi ed the country’s overall strengths, and boosted the development of the health service. These policies and measures have also laid the foundation for carrying forward a deep and comprehensive reform of the country’s health care system.
