ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the development of and developments in IR in South Africa since the end of the Cold War and the demise of apartheid, taking 2 February 1990 as its starting point: the day on which (then) President F. W. de Klerk announced the unbanning of the ANC and other political organisations and the release of Nelson Mandela and scores of political prisoners from jail. In the first section I will deal briefly with developments in the pre-1990 era,2 setting the scene for a more detailed discussion in section two of the contemporary study of IR and the context in which “doing IR” is taking place.3
