ABSTRACT

The word “ability” is used in psychology to describe existing foundation actions that underlie skilled performance (McMorris, 2004). Abilities are thought of as being largely genetic and something that the individual is born with (Honeybourne, 2006). Having ability, whether it is in music, languages, mathematics or sport, provides the individual with the basis from which to learn skills and Schmidt (1991) argues that ability is essentially unchanged by practice or experience. There is debate as to whether an individual has groups of abilities or specifi c ones.
