ABSTRACT
Chris Rock tells a joke in which he bemoans the upside-down state of our society because the best rapper is White and the best golfer is Black. Th e rapper he is referring to is Eminem and the golfer is Tiger Woods. By any way we wish to measure it, Eminem is White. But is Tiger Woods Black? He has an Asian mother and his father was not completely African. If anything Tiger Woods is more Asian than he is Black. At times he has attempted to discuss the multiracial nature of his identity and has been criticized for it. Some people have argued that Tiger Woods is attempting to hide his “Blackness” by embracing a multiracial identity. It takes more than our genetic makeup to determine our racial identity. General social norms contribute greatly to what is acceptable in shaping our racial identity.
