ABSTRACT

Samaritans is an international crisis intervention/suicide prevention organization that began in England in 1953 (https://www.metanoia.org/ suicide/samaritans.htm) and was established in Boston in 1974 (https:// www.samaritansofboston.org). Its mission has remained strong over the years. Its purpose is to alleviate despair, isolation, distress, and suicidal feelings among individuals in our community, 24 hours a day; to educate the public about suicide prevention; and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide. Samaritans also wants to be the place survivors turn when they are in need of support, resources, or just a place to grieve. All of our programs are based on the practices and principles of befriending, which is unconditional and nonjudgmental listening.
