ABSTRACT
Although the traditional picture of grief mirrors the intuitive pattern, a second pattern is emerging as important in the lives of many grieversthe instrumental pattern.
Identified so far are three key elements associated with the instrumental griever:
1. Focus on cognition/moderated affect
2. A desire to master feelings along with a general reluctance to talk about feelings
3. Problem-solving activity
As with the intuitive style, these elements function together as a system. Readers should not assume that they operate independently of one another.
