ABSTRACT
Sri Lanka, resplendent island at the southern tip of India, land of ancient cultures and mélange of people, is the only country in the world to have an honorific title – Sri – before its name. It is also the oldest electoral democracy in Asia and one of the first developing countries in the world to promote universal free healthcare and education. In 2007, Sri Lanka had the highest score on the Human Development Index in South Asia.1
