ABSTRACT
The Sri Lankan government’s mishandling of the political situation following Black July turned the island’s crisis into a regional and international conflict. Its first misstep was to push the more extreme elements of both the Sinhala and Tamil communities out of the political process, leaving a vacuum that would be filled by the armed militants within both communities.
