Several of the country’s leading newspapers published their first major articles about homosexuals in 1950. The stories printed in those elite journalistic voices routinely used the term “perverts” as a synonym for “homosexuals,” with typical headlines in the single most influential of the papers, the New York Times, reading “Perverts Called Government Peril” and “Federal Vigilance on Perverts Asked.”1
