ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will identify and explore the various departmental, journalistic and technological roles and structures within different television newsrooms. This will help to unravel the often rather complex relationships that exist between constellations of media technologies and human resources which are responsible for constructing a particular organisation’s news agenda and daily news content. When attempting to understand how a newsroom is constructed, organised and managed, it is often useful to think about less familiar concepts, such as flow, connectivity, association and contingency, rather than simply describing what have in the past been accepted and consistent or unchanging managerial or political structures that typify newsroom organisation and the behaviour of those who work within them.
