ABSTRACT
How does technological complexity arise? Before situating the present chapter within the literature on technological complexity, we first need a definition.
By technological complexity we understand a system that is characterized by a large number of constituent components that have in addition a high degree of interdependence (functional interconnections, or interactions). Complexification by this definition is a simultaneous increase in both system components and their interdependence (interrelationships) within a given system.
