Th e fi rst bit of advice I was given by a friend when I came out to her was, “Don’t tell anyone you’re married. Single lesbians will run from you like you had the plague.” She was right, and she was wrong. Some women, on hearing about my marital status, broke off their conversations midstream, but others did not.
