ABSTRACT

For those afraid of having literature sent to their homes, post offi ce boxes, available for minimal rates, aff orded privacy. Women paid cash in advance, and some used pseudonyms.

Married women who love women (MWLW) still use a multitude of plans to aff ord them the protection they feel they need when they visit a therapist, attend a support group or rap session, or meet and talk with other women like themselves. Pretexts range from registering for classes with hours that coincide with actual meetings, to keeping car trunks fi lled with packages so that a woman can produce a bag or two and say she has been shopping. One support group for MWLW has created a vague, nondisclosing cover fl ier so that women have something to show their husbands if they should be asked where they’ve been.
