Scoring the unconscious
In Chapters 7-9 we shall demonstrate how analysands who talk about whatever comes to mind are articulating lines of thought of which they are mostly unconscious. While the manifest topics will seem disconnected-how does talking about going to a shopping mall follow from discussing a novel by James Joyce?—listening to enough of these manifest meanderings reveals chains of ideas. This is the latent content not evident in the manifest text. It is the hidden discourse of the unconscious which speaks beneath the surface of articulated ideas; it is the connecting link between apparent verbal ramblings.
