Unconscious work

Psychoanalysis is a working partnership in which both analyst and patient have specific tasks. The fundamental aim of the analytical couple is to facilitate the expression of unconscious thinking, so that whatever ails the analysand-be it a symptom, a character trait, a disturbing mood, a relational ineptitude-the analysand and the psychoanalyst are provided with lots of information. Given enough information from the unconscious, most psychoanalysts will be in a position to help analysands discover those patterns of thought or behaviour that cause mental pain.
