ABSTRACT

Vernacular buildings are extremely varied in their materials, styles and age. They are essentially utilitarian in nature, built for a specific purpose, and reflect locally available materials. They form an intrinsic and important part of the built heritage but a lack of understanding of their importance and methods of construction has meant the loss of many of these buildings. Increasing awareness through the workings of groups like the Scottish Vernacular Buildings Working Group and other similar societies means that the importance of these buildings and the research required into the origins and construction is being raised.
