ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the personal aspects of assertiveness-not about how you relate to others, but how you relate to yourself. Of course there are many references to attitudes, emotions, and self-confidence in previous chapters, but there are some more general issues that I want to cover here, both to pull these previous ideas together and to give you some helpful techniques. This chapter completes the three chapters that have been about managing assertiveness. Points and techniques in this chapter relate particularly to the contents of the last two chapters, in which I have covered assertiveness techniques (Chapter 7) and ways of coping with difficult situations (Chapter 8). As I have said earlier, you may end up shifting backwards and forwards between these three chapters and you will find that the chapters come full circle.
