ABSTRACT

This book offers a contribution to the study of contemporary U.S. peace activism and the movement, with a focus on participation, diversity, political opportunity structure, and activists’ perceptions and experiences. By using an integrated theoretical framework based on the theories of new social movements, social networks, and political opportunity structures, I have taken into account both social psychological and macrosociological factors that shape activist participation and opportunities for the movement. I briefl y discuss my major fi ndings here and provide a more detailed account in the following subsections of this chapter.
