The current study examined the strategies and approaches utilized by parents guiding young children at the computer in the home setting. Language used by parents when interacting with their children at the computer was considered. Parental perspectives for the signifi cance of computers in the lives of their children and goals for development of computer knowledge were also examined. The review of related research and literature will begin with a discussion of how researchers view the impact of new technologies on children. Next research studies will be reviewed that focused on children using computers in school settings. Recent studies, which research computers in the home setting, will be examined in detail. Through the review of related research and literature, a perspective will be offered for the current research and a rationale for research that is needed.
