Phase-Oriented Treatment

The phase-oriented treatment model requires that careful stabilization and ego building precede any work with traumatic memories. Originally formulated by Pierre Janet (1919/1976) in the early 1900s, phase-oriented treatment has become increasingly advocated by clinicians in the field of dissociative disorders. It is now considered the standard of care in the treatment of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative disorders (Brand, 2001; Chu, 1998; International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation [ISST-D], in press; Steele, Van der Hart, & Nijenhuis, 2005).
