ABSTRACT

Remember that motivation diagnosis is primarily about diagnosing the connections. To diagnose, we need three things:

An understanding of the connection An understanding of the determinants of the connection A roadmap for how to gather data on the connection by observing and listening

Understanding Action-to-Results Connections An action-to-results connection is the relationship we expect between how much energy we put into an action and how much of the result is generated. It is the degree to which we believe we can control our results by changing the amount of energy we apply to the actions that produce those results. Interestingly, this connection and the results-to-evaluation connection are often where connections are the weakest when there is a motivation problem, yet they are the two connections a supervisor can most easily change.
