ABSTRACT
Literacy holds a pivotal and unique place among the necessary skills for successful living in our society; yet we know little about adults who have low literacy skills. In fact, it is diffi cult for those who are literate to imagine what life would be like without knowing how to read and write. Nevertheless, many Americans do have trouble reading, making it diffi cult for them to fi ll out forms, read instructions, and apply for and get good jobs.
