ABSTRACT

As Hjelle and Ziegler (1992) have argued, all personality theories are based on assumptions about human nature. REBT is based on a theory of personality which Ellis (1978) ®rst outlined at the end of the 1970s. In this Point I will outline REBT's position on the basic assumptions about human nature underpinning its personality theory. I will also consider REBT's position on a range of philosophical and theoretical ideas other than that of post-modern relativism, which I discussed in Point 1. REBT's distinctiveness is not to be seen in any one of its following positions. Rather, its distinctiveness resides in their mix.
