ABSTRACT
The urgencies of the post-9/11 realities encourage many forms of rethinking, as well as posing largely difficult challenges of personal engagement with the historical moment. I think of “engagement,” above all, as a moral/intellectual commitment to bring to the life of the university a sensitive and objective understanding of practices and events, including whatever is topical and controversial.
