ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describesthercrootssofScommunity psychology and then, how we as researchers engaged the Oxford House community as active participants and maintained this mutually beneficial alliance (Jason et al, 1994; Jason, Davis, Ferrari, & Bishop, 2001). In adopting an unconventional approach, the DePaul University team not only worked extensively to cultivate collaborative and cooperative relationships with Oxford Houses as well as other relevant agencies, but became committed to active involvement in the process of creating change. These commitments led our research team to adopt roles beyond those of the traditional researcher—functioning also as occasional consultants, support system, and advocates for Oxford House.
