ABSTRACT

For forty-four years I have been studying texts and articles in psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, first as an amateur, then as a professional. I also have taught psychology and various forms of therapy at university level for 30 years. Needless to say, in that period of time one has a lot of discussions with both professionals and trainees particularly, in this context, in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. I had relatively brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy myself for about 8 months in 1967-68 and of course, as we have seen, I was treated, using various methods and techniques, for psychosis and Tourette’s syndrome in 1979-81. Over these four decades or so I have, sadly, had a large number of labels attached to me. I will outline some of these here that have popped up in both formal and informal interaction.
