ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how to manage the first few public performances, the press night and how to look after the show during the run. It includes advice on the following steps:

The first few public performances Notes after shows Rehearsals during your first few public performances Press night The run of performances from after the press night until the last night Analysing your work after the run has ended

The first few public performances

These early performances give you the opportunity to test-run the work in front of an audience and their response allows you to measure the accuracy of your directing choices. Note the audiences’ reactions to the performance at the same time as watching the work on stage, paying particular attention to the moments when the audience are concentrated and when they get restless. This will give you a clear idea of the sections that you need to work on most.
