If you want to do experiments where gene expression is being measured in a cell or tissue in two different physiological states in order to determine the effect of those states relative to one another, you will need to do some statistical analysis of the results to confirm that the differences seen are significant. I aim here to give a basic outline of statistical approaches that are routinely used. If you need more complex analysis, then might I direct you to a statistics textbook?
