ABSTRACT

Sharon: The thing I can’t figure out is why it is so addicting? Why will I watch the TV for hours when there aren’t any shows on that I like. There must be something in the programs that is satisfying me. Perhaps it is the commercials that I am attracted to. They offer me all kinds of dreams of hope, beauty, and everlasting youth. And I do want those things and more. All these things I think when the TV is off. But when it’s on I am in a dream state awaiting the next fantasy. Not all programs supply sufficient fantasy material but commercials certainly do. So, I think I watch TV for the advertising and not the programming itself. That’s a little backwards and very frightening but I’m glad I realized that (just now).
