ABSTRACT

When we spoke to FRANCINE SHAPIRO, she was right in the middle of organizing trauma treatment efforts in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC, just as she had done for the tragedies in Oklahoma City, Columbine, and Bosnia. “This is what I do,” she said simply. Indeed Shapiro speaks with passion and excitement about the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) approach she started more than a decade ago. EMDR has become one of the most dramatic (and controversial) treatment methods that has emerged in recent times for treating posttraumatic stress and other psychological disorders.
