ABSTRACT

This chapter brie¯y summarises existing cognitive behavioural treatment for bulimia nervosa and the evidence for its ef®cacy. Issues raised by existing treatment are identi®ed, including the evidence that a signi®cant number of people do not currently bene®t a great deal from cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for BN. Possible reasons for this are explored. The case for a new cognitive model is then presented, together with some of the main in¯uences and empirical evidence that has led us to its development. These include early writers on BN, more recent development of speci®c models of cognitive therapy for different disorders, work in the ®eld of normal eating and the emergence and development of schema focused and, most recently, metacognitive theory and treatments.
