ABSTRACT

Today a significant amount of creative energy and motivation in feminist activism is expressed in the form of networks of women’s groups, gender institutes, politico-cultural performances, and feminist coalitions across the world. While many feel overwhelmed by the magnitude and scope of economic/social transformation, capitalist expansion, the squelching of human rights and political repression, women have joined hands to resist oppressive structures using a range of methods. Massive anti-war demonstrations and protests have been organised using cultural performances, art collectives and musical and theatrical performances, which have made inroads to the world of campaigning. The worldwide demonstrations in which activists gathered in capitals around the globe advocating a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Iraq is a result of this mass transnational mobilisation.
