ABSTRACT

I, the counsellor, am in an oncology clinic. I am listening to a doctor and he is talking to me: ‘Melanie I think I am looking at cancer. Can you see how your blood supply has been rerouted to the tumour?’ I am still. I hear the voices of the many women I have worked with describing this moment. I am in the room. I feel the nurse’s hand holding mine. I am out of the room. I am in shock.
