ABSTRACT

The aims of a beginners course in listening and speaking are: to help the learners to be able to cope with meaning-focused input and meaning focused output and to make the early learning as relevant as possible to their language use needs. If the learners are children, then they should learn the high frequency words of the language which allow them to listen to simple stories, begin to read graded readers, and do interesting activities. Provide Plenty of Comprehensible Input Note that most of these activities involve learners in learning the words through listening and doing before they deepen their learning through using the words in guided speaking. Activities like listen and do, picture ordering, bingo and information transfer show how listening can be practiced in very active ways without requiring much speaking. Listening grids involve using listening and often questioning to fill a matrix with information.
