ABSTRACT

What is meant when discourse is claimed by CDA to be a form of social action? CDA studies relations between discourse, power, dominance and social inequality. Think of some specifi c social situations where these elements are crucial and consider their possible relationships. Think of some communicative events which might be amenable to positive discourse analysis, as proposed by Martin (1999). Flowerdew explains how systemic functional linguistics is a preferred method of CDA. Consider (a) the extent to which this model is appropriate for CDA and (b) the extent to which it might be suited to multi-modal analysis, as exemplifi ed by Chouliaraki. Flowerdew exemplifi es resistance in discourse through appropriation by members of gay communities. Think of other social situations where appropriation is likely to occur.
