ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the development from single ground to multi-ground EU legal frameworks of gender equality by asking where and how concepts related to multiple discrimination are used in legal texts at EU level and in what contexts multiple discrimination is addressed. Multiple discrimination in EU equality law has mainly been addressed explicitly with a view to gender-mainstreaming the fight against other kinds of discrimination (discrimination on grounds of ethnic origin, age, etc). Finally, it is discussed to what extent the existing provisions on discrimination and positive action are applicable in multiple and intersectional discrimination cases and to what extent EU law offers effective means of redress in such cases.
