ABSTRACT

In this chapter I wish to explore some of the issues, questions and ethical dilemmas faced when working with clients who are also disabled. I look at how society deals with the disturbance created by disability, how the body of a person with a disability is objectified and the subsequent effects on attachment and relating. I propose that it is in the process of working through the fragmentation, in an embodied relational way, that space is created to allow increased capacity to breathe. Through this exploration I will weave case material from a client who is disabled, as well as my own experience and perspectives around disability. It is a work in progress, not a detailed case analysis, aiming to pose questions more than offer answers, to help us look.
