ABSTRACT

The main focus of this chapter is the empirical measurement of victimisation in England and Wales. Victimisation may be divided into two types, namely primary and secondary victimisation. Primary victimisation, which will be discussed in the first part of this chapter, refers to victims’ experiences of the crimes committed against them. In order to address these experiences fully, the chapter documents the extent of crime, the incidence of repeat victimisation, the impact of crime upon victims, and the fear of crime. Secondary victimisation, which is the subject of the second part of the chapter, refers to the treatment of victims by criminal justice agencies, such as the police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the courts.
