ABSTRACT

Defi ning and implementing the social aspect of sustainability is evolving in practice as people commit themselves and their organizations to becoming more sustainable. As remarked on many times in this volume, the social aspect of sustainability has received little attention from researchers or environmental organizations, so practitioners have been left to their own devices in this area. For this chapter, we interviewed small business owners with a reputation for sustainable practices to discover both their conceptions of the social aspect of sustainability and what actions they were taking that we might think of as fostering social sustainability.
