ABSTRACT

The Transcendence Index (TI; Weisskopf, 1950) is a content analysis system that was developed originally to provide empirical support for the design and selection of picture stimuli for storytelling techniques. Weisskopf conceptualized and quantified the variety of ways that people who were asked simply to describe a picture went beyond, or transcended, the stimulus by adding projective material. Thus, the TI was not conceptualized as a measure of personality per se; in undated lecture notes, Weisskopf equated projection to “the process by which personality structure affects behavior.”
