ABSTRACT

Although not submitted to randomized clinical trials, evidence from a wide range of longrange posttreatment outcome studies indicates that drug testing can be a useful and even powerful tool in motivating abstinence during the recovery process. e use of drug testing as an

adjunct to treatment is not without controversy, inasmuch as it assumes a goal of abstinence in the treatment process, an assumption that many regard as self-defeating, particularly as they proclaim addiction to be a chronic disease characterized by relapses.
